Nationally, 4-H Shooting Sports reaches more that 300,000 young boys and girls every year and introduces them to competitive shooting sports. The world of shooting sports can be gratifying for youngsters, especially those who aren’t athletes. The program provides a supportive environment in which young people can experience hands-on, fun, learning experiences.
Berkeley County 4-H Shooting Sports is open to all youth age 9, by september 30th of the current school year, to age 21, provided s/he will not reach his/her 21st birthday by December 31st (click here for the complete list of requirements). All children are required to print and fill out the membership enrollment card, code of conduct agreement, media release form, and health history form.
In addition to new members, BC4HSS is in need of volunteers to coordinate county programs and to work at the local level. Shooting sports leaders act as role models and must impart the 4-H philosophy and youth development objectives to 4-H members. Individuals who are interested in shooting sports and are willing to learn about them can become involved by contacting the club leaders or the Berkeley County Extension Office. All persons interesting in becoming shooting sports instructors are trained by state instructors at state and regional workshops and are certified to teach the club courses. Additionally, 4-H teen leaders are encouraged to assist with instruction under close supervision of certified instructors.
Adult volunteers who are interested in becoming involved, but don’t have an interest in becoming an instructor are also welcome! BC4HSS is in need of adults active in their communities to act as public liaisons by coordinating membership drives, assisting in fundraising events, and assisting the members in drafting press releases for the local media.
